The goal and purpose of this essay is to study if and how multimodality is used within a Swedish school in Kalmar. This is accomplished by observing the different modalities inside the classroom and how the use of different modalities affects the teaching. The aim of this paper is to investigate the subject matter of visual communication in presentation brochures of two Swedish regions: Region Halland and Region Dalarna. My focuses are the following questions: what is the aim of the brochures and in what ways does the visual material relate to that aim? How can strategic communication be defined through a visual perspective and in what ways is it useful in the context of presentation brochures of the regions? What sort of communicational functions are specific for the visual material in relation to the written language of the brochures? Lead by these questions, I start by analyzing the brochures through a textual analysis and a social semiotic approach. The result shows that the aim seems to be both political and commercial, but that the visual elements relate more strongly to the commercial aim than to the political aim by the way they strive to present a positive image of the region. The visual elements work in strategic ways that I define as visual strategies.

I en överenskommelse mellan staten och Sveriges kommuner och landsting är åtgärder mot den kvinnliga ohälsan och sjukfrånvaron prioriterade. Som ett led i detta arbete genomfördes denna undersökning med syfte att undersöka läkarutlåtanden om hälsotillstånd utifrån ett genusperspektiv. Detta genom att fastställa könsskillnader avseende uttalanden om psyko-socio-ekonomiska aspekter som inte är av relevans för det medicinska tillståndet i läkarutlåtanden om hälsotillstånd. För att erhålla kunskap om huruvida psyko-socio-ekonomiska aspekter förekom i undersökningsunderlaget, analyserades 247 läkarutlåtanden om hälsotillstånd med kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Den kvalitativa innehållsanalysen resulterade i fem kategorier med sammanlagt 16 identifierade faktorer som alla var av psyko-socio-ekonomisk karaktär och utan relevans för det medicinska tillståndet.

The main domain in which eating disorders are defined is medical, whereas socio-cultural perspectives are less common. Because social workers seeks to explain different problems taking societal factors into account, we asked ourselves if social workers have a way of understanding eating disorders, that is different from a medical point of view. Two focus group interviews were conducted; the one composed by social workers with experience of working with eating disorders, and the other by social workers without that experience, which enabled comparisons. The interviews were analyzed using socio-cultural and feminist perspectives. The result showed that the social workers use socio-cultural perspectives in explaining eating disorders.

Syftet med vårt arbete var att få mer kunskap om vad socio- och emotionella svårigheter och utagerande innebär. Men även hur man kan hjälpa/stödja dessa barn. Dessutom att få svar om det är någon skillnad mellan pojkar och flickors beteende.Vi har läst litteratur som behandlar detta ämne och gjort en kvalitativ undersökning där vi har intervjuat 3 förskollärare, 2 specialpedagoger, 2 barn- och ungdomspsykologer samt 1 genuspedagog, från en mindre och en större kommun.I vårt arbete har vi i litteraturen och intervjuerna kommit fram till att utagerande barn med socio- och emotionella svårigheter behöver fasta och konsekventa regler för att kunna fungera i barngruppen. This study is about underlying discourses of two tv-series for children from opposite parts of the globe. Focus lays on which morals and values adults choose to teach children through popular culture, even on an unaware basis and how does differ, or not, between different societies.The theoretical framework chosen for this study are semiotics in combination with the concept of the gaze by Laura Mulvey. Semiotics is the study of signs and their underlying meanings constructed by society. By studying popular culture with the tools provided by semiotic analysis it is possible to discouver underlying myths, social constructions of society, that are reproduced over and over again to remain alive. Mulveys theory of the gaze is helpfull in the process of decoding those constructions to discover the dominant partys and norms represented.In this particular study underlying structures such as patriarcal power relations, unequality between the representation of different ethnicities and the consistent presents of the male gaze where discovered.

This essay revolves around the organization Mobile Art Production, MAP, and their artexhibition Street View shown on Kungsportsavenyn, Gothenburg two weeks in April 2010. Beingan alternative to traditional art institutions, MAP sets out goals for their activities and the aim ofthe essay is to examine whether the main goals of the organization were fulfilled through theexhibition. This study concerns digital stories told by five young Romani students and one teacher from Roma Culture Class in Stockholm, Sweden. The theoretical framework draws from theories concerning identity, culture,Romanipe, the Romani value system and social semiotics. The material for the study is the digital stories that were analyzed qualitatively. The results show that the young Roma in the study demonstrate pride in their Romani background and culture, but also signs of changes and development in their culture. Some of the participants do not show external signs of Romani traditions, for example in the ways of dressing.

In this thesis I'm trying to examine the meaning potential of visual elements and layout in a Swedish newspaper front page and the same newspaper's website's start page, drawing on theories about multimodality and social semiotics developed mainly by Theo van Leeuwen and Gunther Kress. The study is focusing on Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the website aftonbladet.se and compares these three different days. In this thesis I also try to examine what the newspaper communicate about its identity through the different visual components.
